Dear friends,
In December 2019, with the initial participation of 15 members, the AHEPA chapter in Frankfurt was founded. Our chapter is named “Johann Wolfgang Goethe,” highlighting the close connection of our members to the city and its history.
The goal and mission of the American-Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA) is to promote Hellenism, education, charity, social responsibility, family, and individual excellence.
Before I elaborate on the organization’s goals, I believe it is important to define the direction of AHEPA by specifying what we do not want it to be as an ethnic organization:
- We do not want it to be another small local organization consisting of a small group of people from the same region of Greece or with similar professions or educational backgrounds. There are already other associations that successfully fulfill these specific goals.
- We do not want to be a “remote-controlled” ethnic organization that is openly supported by political parties or other organizations. AHEPA always supports the ruling Greek government, regardless of which party is in power, and strives to contribute to achieving the national goals of our homeland through constructive cooperation.
- We do not want to be an organization with a “monocultural” mindset. We do not need more “ghetto” cores in our local society.
To avoid any misunderstandings, we want to preserve and pass on the Greek identity and heritage, but not by excluding contact and collaboration with other organizations, especially in the country where we live.
You understand, then, that something different motivated us to establish a new chapter of this great ethnic organization in Frankfurt. AHEPA’s constitution includes a deep commitment to preserving Greek identity and consciousness, while at the same time remaining open to society and its organizations with a cosmopolitan perspective.
We need an ethnic organization that can be a bridge to Greek identity and consciousness and is connected with other ethnic and local organizations. In this effort, we extend a hand of cooperation to all who share our concerns and vision.
Today, Region 28 (European Spirit), to which our chapter belongs, maintains chapters in London, Paris, Brussels, Stuttgart, Berlin, Wiesbaden, Vienna, Westminster, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Munich. Soon, more will follow, further strengthening the organization’s presence in Europe.
We are by your side and invite you to support the work of AHEPA.
Best regards,
Dr. Sávvas Apostolidis
President of Chapter A617
